How long were you dating before you got engaged?

How long had you been dating your SO before deciding to get engaged? I have been with my bf for over a year now and were not engaged yet. Is that odd? I thought it was normal, but then was watching an old epi of Millionaire Matchmaker last night and Patti said that if there is no ring after 6 months of dating, then you should get outta the relationship. (My bf and I live together and are pregnant. Did I miss the marriage boat? I'm not really into the whole marriage thing, but I thought 6 months was a pretty speedy deadline to put on a relationship.)
